Our Top Picks
Best Overall: Microsoft Surface Laptop 2
4.6
The Microsoft Surface 2 makes for a great MacBook alternative. It has a similar sleek design that weighs just 2.76 pounds and is 0.57 inches thick at its slimmest point. The 13.5-inch display showcases the same HD resolution as its predecessor with 201 pixels per inch. The Surface 2 has also made significant improvements to its hardware, boasting faster processing speeds and silent fans that will keep your laptop cool under pressure.
One of the major draws of the Surface 2 is the ability to customize your specs. The cheapest configuration offers an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB SSD, and 14.5 hours of battery. Microsoft also offers detailed descriptions for each piece of hardware to help buyers decide which specs fit their needs. The laptop is available in four fashionable colors: black, platinum, burgundy, and cobalt blue.
One minor downside is the lack of port space. The Surface 2 offers a USB 3.0 and a mini DisplayPort but doesn’t have a standard USB 3.1 input. It’s a bit of an inconvenience, but it doesn’t detract from the laptop’s overall performance. Whether you’re working hard or relaxing with a movie, the Surface 2 makes for a reliable travel companion.
Best Splurge: LG Gram
4.6
One of the most talked about laptops on the market right now is the LG Gram — an interesting attempt at competing with the thin, sleek Macbook line while remaining firmly inspired by LG’s mobile device ecosystem. Weighing less than 2.5 lbs, it is basically the lightest 15-inch laptop you can buy with this level of power. It also packs a 72 Wh battery that LG has clocked in at over 16 hours of full functioning time. The machine also runs an 8th gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a full 1TB of solid-state storage, so there’s really not much more you can ask for in terms of modern tech configurations. There's a USB-C port, an HDMI port and three USB 3.0 ports for plenty of I/O to cover your needs. The screen is also impressive, offering 1920 x 1080 in IPS touch display, with super clear, crisp color performance. There are even some cool add-on features including a fingerprint reader, adjustable keyboard backlight intensity and four-finger touch functionality on the display. It’s a sleek laptop, fit for most of your modern needs and well-worth it's price tag.
Best Budget: Lenovo Chromebook C330 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop
If you’re looking for a touchscreen laptop on a budget, you can’t do much better than the Lenovo Chromebook C330. As a 2-in-1 design, the C330 can switch between a laptop and tablet with a quick flip of the screen. There’s not much to the overall design, but it feels durable and solid when in use.
Performance wise, the C330 has a MediaTek processor leading the way. And with 4GB of RAM, the laptop can handle your typical multitasking and app-switching. While 64GB of storage might not sound like much on a regular laptop, it's actually a lot for a Chromebook and especially great for the price. There’s also a slew of connections including USB-C, SD card holder, and USB 3.0 inputs for connecting to external hardware.
Best Value: Asus ZenBook Pro
At well over $1,000, you may be asking yourself how the ZenBook Pro earned the “Best Value” spot on the list. Alas, it’s important to note that, value ≠ cheap. Instead, the ZenBook Pro gives you bang for your buck in both cutting-edge features and versatility.
A 15.6-inch Nano Edge touch display is the true centerpiece of this device, which is pretty impressive considering that at a resolution of 1920 x 1080, it actually has a lower pixel count than many other flagship laptops. But it’s the super slim bezels and the impressive wide viewing angle — which spans up to 178 degrees — that give you a cinematic experience. Plus, the machine's power is off the charts thanks to a 7th gen i7 quad-core processor and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. Add in a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphics card with its own 4GB of dedicated RAM, and you have a machine that will make you forget the comparatively lower resolution.
If you are after a better display experience, Asus has thrown in two USB-C ports for connecting up to two different external monitors. They’ve even designed the ZenBook Pro around a highly efficient dual-fan system that keeps the device 2.35 degrees cooler than the previous gen. That’s a lot of innovation packed into one machine.
Take a peek at some of the other best ASUS laptops you can buy.
Best Versatility: LG gram 2-in-1
The latest in the LG gram series comes as a 14-inch 2-in-1 convertible laptop with a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution touchscreen, and it performs well in all its forms. The display’s in-plane switching (IPS) technology provides a clear, vivid picture when viewed from almost any angle. There are no options for higher resolutions like 4K, but keeping the display at full HD allows for smoother performance and excellent battery life (listed at 21 hours) that outlasts many of its competitors.
The touchscreen is built with Gorilla Glass for extra durability and responsiveness. Writing and drawing feels natural and accurate as well, thanks to an LG Stylus Pen with Wacom AES (active electrostatic) technology that detects tilts and over 4,000 levels of pressure. Powering the LG gram 2-in-1 is a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM, plenty for day-to-day work or play. It also has a 512GB solid-state drive (SSD) hard drive, yet at a very light 2.5 pounds, you may forget you’re carrying around a high-performance multipurpose device.
Runner-Up, Best Versatility: ASUS Chromebook Flip
Whether you’re running a business, taking notes for class, or watching your favorite TV show, the Asus Chromebook Flip is built to keep you connected and powered up throughout the day. The versatile device has a unique 360-degree hinge that lets it function as either a laptop or a tablet, and the 12.5-inch touchscreen has a full HD display for using apps and Chrome OS programs. Weighing just 2.65 pounds and featuring an aluminum body and Corning Gorilla Glass in the display, it’s portable and tough, able to keep up with you no matter where your day takes you — and the ten hours of battery life don’t hurt, either. It can power up within 3.5 seconds, and offline connectivity allows you to keep working, playing, or watching, even without access to the Internet. The Asus Chromebook Flip comes equipped with a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a Micro SD slot, and a standard audio jack.
Best Battery Life: HP Spectre x360 13
The Spectre x360 line is HP’s version of the Yoga and the XPS options out there. There are a few differentiating factors about this laptop, however — the main being its battery life. Most 13-inch touchscreen laptops in the Spectre's class advertise up to 14.5 hours of battery life, but the x360 offers 16 hours and 45 minutes — which is even more impressive when you get a look at the other specs it packs in.
The 3840 x 2160 4K Micro-Edge display contains a whopping 8.2 million pixels, and the Gorilla Glass surface makes the touchscreen functions smooth and anti-scratch. The i7 processor is top-notch on benchmarks and this configuration comes with 16GB of DDR3 RAM and 512 GB of solid-state primary storage. There’s an internal IR thermal scanner for more advanced readings of how hot the machine is getting. There’s Fast Charge technology that promises to juice up the laptop from dead to 90% in 90 minutes. The keyboard is brightly backlit and it supports dual 4K external displays. The whole package feels premium and sits at only 13.6mm thick and 2.78 pounds, so the great battery life does not come at the expense of a sleek design.
Best for Gaming: Samsung XE510C24-K01US Chromebook Pro
Hardcore gamers will likely splurge on a dedicated gaming laptop or desktop with loads of customizable options. But for the more casual gamers who value portability, the Samsung Chromebook Pro is our top pick. Touting “the power of a Chromebook and the versatility of a tablet,” the Pro has a 360-degree rotating screen that makes it easy to switch from work to fun. It’s powered by a sixth-generation 0.9GHz Core m3-6Y30 processor, which provides strong performance, low power consumption, and low heat generation. All in all, it’ll score you about eight hours of battery life. It also packs HD Graphics 515, which means it’s more than capable of running your favorite games and apps. On top of that, they will look great thanks to its gorgeous 12.3-inch 2400 x 1600 LED display. This Chromebook runs Chrome OS and comes included with a built-in pen.

How We Tested
We bought two top-rated touchscreen laptops and our reviewers tested them by using them daily for weeks on end. We asked our testers to consider the most important features when using these touchscreen laptops, from their design to their battery life. We’ve outlined the key takeaways here so that you, too, know what to look for when shopping.
What to Look for in a Touchscreen Laptop
Screen size - Touchscreen laptops come in a variety of sizes, ranging from around 10 to 15 inches or more (measured diagonally). Smaller screens will give you more of a tablet vibe, while larger screens will feel more like a dedicated laptop.
Design - The beauty of a touchscreen laptop is that it’s much more versatile than a traditional model. Many can be used in tent mode (their keyboards can fold back at an angle) and some go as far as transforming into full-fledged tablets (their keyboards can fold all the way back behind the display). Depending on how you intend to use your touchscreen laptop, a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 design may be a valuable feature.
Battery life - Because touchscreen laptops are often smaller than traditional laptops, their battery life often pales in comparison. Some will offer up as few as eight hours (depending on brightness level and usage), but others can pack as many as 20 hours of juice.

Our testers didn’t like that it was heavy and wished it had more USB 3.0 ports. One reviewer also noted that the bottom of the laptop got “noticeably warm” with heavy use.

What We Like
- Simple setup
- Very portable

What We Don't Like

The most impressive things about this device, according to our reviewers, were its straightforward setup process and its easy-to-navigate desktop and start menu. One tester also raved that it was extremely portable and that its lightweight design was “quite aesthetically pleasing and in the same vein as Apple products.” In terms of negatives, our reviewers felt that its screen was too reflective.
